The Arole Agarawu African Poetry Prize
The Alhaji Arole Agarawu African Poetry Prize seeks to showcase excellence in African poetry while honoring the legacy and contributions of Alhaji Arole Agarawu a songwriter, photographer, and musician to African oral traditions.
In its inaugural year, the foundation will recognize poets who demonstrate exceptional craft, cultural insight, and innovative use of language in their work, elevate African voices in contemporary poetry, and foster a deeper appreciation for the continent’s rich literary heritage.
The prize takes its inspiration from the incredible work already being done through the African Poetry Book Fund and the Evaristo African Poetry Prize (formerly the Brunel Poetry Prize).
This year, the foundation will award:
- The Arole Agarawu African Poetry Prize, awarded to any writer who identifies as African or a descendant of Africa (in the many ways this can be interpreted) for a suite of 10 poems, selected by the guest judge.
- The Arole Grayling Wraith Prize, generously supported by Grayling and Wraith, awarded to any writer living on the African continent for a suite of 10 poems nominated by the board. In addition to the cash prize, Grayling and Wraith will produce a production-grade video of a selected poem by the winning poet.
Each submission must consist of 10 poems that form a coherent suite or body of work.

Curatorial Intensive on Marginal Regions, Displacement and Heritage in
Contemporary Art
Angels and Muse is pleased to invite applications for a five-day residential curatorial intensive in Benin City, Nigeria, convened with support from Gwaertler Stiftung.
Hosted at Angels and Muse’s Black Muse space in Benin City, the intensive will convene12 curators, researchers, and cultural workers interested in rethinking curatorial practice through questions of heritage, marginality, displacement, memory, and regional knowledge systems.
Taking place from June 22nd – 28th, 2026, the programme responds to the imbalance within overriding narratives of contemporary African art, where metropolitan centres often overshadow the histories, practices, and cultural infrastructures of marginal regions and communities. The intensive seeks to foreground overlooked histories and
underrepresented cultural producers, and other regions existing outside dominant
institutional visibility.
Through critical conversations, collaborative workshops, archival inquiry, field research, and peer exchange, participants will explore how indigenous traditions, oral histories, and lived experiences of displacement can inform new curatorial methodologies and cultural futures
Selected participants will receive:
• Accommodation for the duration of the intensive
• Daily meals and refreshments
• Mobility/travel support (partial stipend for domestic travel)

Expanding Technologies Residency: Ibadan/Seattle Visual Arts Exchange is a collaboration between New Culture Studios, CoCA Seattle, and Wa Na Wari.
In a world with ever-deepening digital integration our vision of what technology is and where its influence will take us has steadily narrowed towards an emphasis on computerized novelty. Meanwhile, enduring technologies exist across histories, geographies, and ecosystems, new and old, providing additional possibilities for creating sustainable futures.
How can we expand our definition of technologies and locate diverse sites of innovation that deserve further exploration and understanding?
What are the cultural technologies, indigenous technologies, community-centric technologies, nature-based technologies, collaborative technologies and/or creative technologies that are relevant and applicable today?
The Expanding Technologies Residency is an invitation for one Ibadan-based artist and one Seattle-based artist to explore these themes during site-specific, collaborative programs created by community and artist-run artspaces in Ibadan, Nigeria and Seattle, USA.
One Ibadan-based artist in Seattle from: September 13th – October 3rd
Dates include Wa Na Wari’s Walk the Block and 1st Thursday exhibition at CoCA
One Seattle-based artist in Ibadan from: October 25th – November 14th

Angel & Muse Residency Program
Open Call
The duration of each residency varies from person to person, they however typically range from two-weeks to as long as six months. Our Lagos location can house up to two residents at a time, while our Benin City location houses as many as twelve residents. Residency duration and provisions are typically agreed upon before the resident’s arrival.
We expect that our residents demonstrate eagerness in engaging specific cultural subjects and timely themes with far-reaching impacts. Our residencies are researched based and hope to provide our residents with a space in which they can hone their practice. As such, we do not require finished projects. Residents are however expected to close out their residency with a public presentation, hosted by Angels and Muse, in which they highlight their achievements during the residency.
The research residency is ideal for artists, curators and writers who need time to continue work on an ongoing project or develop a new one provided they can demonstrate the research component of their work. The residency provides accommodation and a stipend to augment living expenses.
